Arabic has three short vowels and three long vowels:

Short Vowels                                     Long Vowels


  فتحة ( َ )    
1 a for fatha


 الف ( ا )
2 aa for alif


ضمة  ( ُ )
 3 u for damma


واو  ( و )
  
4 uu for waaw


كسرة ( ِ )
   
5 i  for kasra


  ياء ( ي )  
       6 ii for yaa'

Hearing the difference between long & short vowels is critical.


1- A long vowel is TWICE as long as a short vowel!

2- An Arabic word cannot have more than two consonants in a row. Therefore, a vowel must appear after every second consonant.
