Listen and compare the short from the long vowels...   Note: Hear the difference between long and short vowels -- this will help with your dictations while you learn to spell.   Note: The pronunciation of the vowels may slightly alter depending on the surrounding consonants. Note: Do not confuse the Arabic Alif with the English letter A. Even though the Alif is the first letter in the Arabic alphabet and the A is the first letter in the English alphabet they are each associated with different sounds. The Alif is closer in sound to the English letter E.
